Our Expert in Residence program invites an aging & elderly care-related specialist to stay on-site at Caring Manoa and share his or her knowledge to enrich the well-being of our care home's residents, their family members, our staff, and the community at large.
From June 3rd to 18th, 2018, we hosted our inaugural Caring Manoa Expert in Residence program, featuring Pittsburgh-based gerontologist and dementia care expert, Rachael Wonderlin. Ms. Wonderlin is the author of When Someone You Know is Living in a Dementia Care Community: Words to Say and Things to Do, published by Johns Hopkins University Press.

Ms. Wonderlin brought an impressive depth of experience to Caring Manoa. Over the course of her two-week stay on premises, Ms. Wonderlin taught through personal anecdotes of working first-hand with hundreds of dementia community residents across the mainland, and she immediately demonstrated her authority on the subject when interacting with our residents. Ms. Wonderlin's refreshing approach to dementia care invigorated our staff, residents, and residents' families. As a result, Caring Manoa's community has learned to appreciate (and even enjoy) the positive aspects of caring for people who suffer from the disease.

On June 10th, 2018, with the support of sponsor organizations Hale Ku'ike, Manoa Cottage Kaimuki, Manoa Senior Care, Beckwith Hillside, Ho'okele Health, and CareSift, as well as elderly support organizations Generations Magazine, KupunaWiki, Alzheimer's Association Aloha Chapter, and AARP Hawaii, Ms. Wonderlin and Todd Pang, Caring Manoa's Vice President, presented to over 120 members of the community for a valuable seminar on dementia care, and the differences between the various types of senior care services in Hawaii.
